This large pair of ceiling lights, dating from 1890, takes the form of English Country House coaching lanterns finished in a dark green painted metal with glass panels. Each lantern has a tapered glass body, a flared smoke hood, a multi-candle cluster, and a long hanging drop rod suspended from a ring fixture at the top. The structure includes distinct mouldings around the cylindrical upper stem and stepped angles on the hood, showing subtle signs of wear on the painted surfaces. Rewired and tested, each piece measures 167 cm high, 40 cm wide, and 40 cm deep, with the stem measuring 80 cm. In a home today, they work well suspended above a grand dining table, in a spacious hallway, or along an expansive landing to create a traditional atmosphere.

Coaching lanterns originally served as illumination for horse-drawn carriages before being adapted into stationary architectural and interior lighting for country estates and hallways.

These lanterns were typically constructed from wrought iron, brass, copper, or painted sheet metal frames paired with clear glass panes to protect the internal light source.

Authentic pieces often display hand-soldered joints, subtle irregularities in the glass, age-appropriate patination on metal surfaces, and evidence of historical conversion from oil or candle to electricity.

Suspended in pairs, these fixtures function effectively above kitchen islands, double-height entrance hallways, or long dining tables to establish scale and visual balance.

Dust metal surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth and clean glass panes using a mild glass cleaner applied directly to a microfibre cloth to prevent liquid from contacting electrical fittings.
