Silver plated wine coolers and decorative planters gained widespread popularity during the Victorian era as advancements in electroplating made luxurious dining accessories accessible to the expanding middle class, reflecting contemporary tastes in lavish tablescapes and interior horticulture.

These items are typically constructed from a base metal such as copper or nickel-silver, which is then coated with a layer of pure silver using traditional electroplating techniques. They often feature intricately pierced galleries, cast embellishments, and soldered joints crafted by skilled metalworkers.

Authentic pieces from the late 19th century frequently exhibit maker marks, EPNS (Electro Plated Nickel Silver) stamps, or Sheffield plating indicators, alongside natural signs of ageing such as subtle wear to the high points and genuine tarnish in recessed areas.

They can be integrated into modern spaces by pairing them with minimalist foliage, such as trailing houseplants or orchids, creating a striking contrast between reflective metallic surfaces and organic green textures on a sideboard or dining table.

Maintenance requires gentle cleaning with a specialised silver cloth or non-abrasive silver foam to avoid wearing through the thin plated layer down to the base metal, whilst storing them in low-humidity environments to minimise oxidisation.
