Description

A magnificent antique Victorian rosewood piano stool with rise and fall action operated by a lever and dating from circa 1885 by Charles Wadman of Bath. The seat rises and fall by way of a lever to the underside of the stool. It reads underneath “PATENTED FOR MANUFACTURER CHAS WADMAN BATH 2376”.

The partnership of cabinet makers & timber merchants was dissolved with the business continued by Charles Wadman at 5 & 6 James Street, Bath (The Furniture Gazette, 7 January 1882). A rise and fall piano stool features a mechanical screw or rack-and-pinion mechanism operated by a side handle or a revolving seat, allowing the pianist to adjust the height for optimal posture while playing.

These stools were typically constructed from dense hardwoods like rosewood, mahogany, or walnut, featuring upholstered seats in materials such as velvet, needlepoint, or leather, often accented with wood marquetry or brass details.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit period-specific joinery, traditional hand-turned legs, functional mechanical height-adjustment hardware with patination, and dense timber construction characteristic of the 19th century.

An antique piano stool functions effectively as an occasional seat, a dressing table chair, or a compact side table when topped with a tray, bringing historical character and textured textiles into contemporary spaces.

Preserve the wood by applying microcrystalline wax periodically, avoid direct sunlight to protect the upholstery colour, and handle any mechanical adjustment mechanisms with care to prevent stripping the internal threads.
