A Georgian silver gilt mug is a drinking vessel crafted from sterling silver and coated with a thin layer of gold, known as vermeil, produced during the Georgian era between 1714 and 1830.

These items were traditionally fashioned from sterling silver using techniques such as raising, casting, chasing, and embossing, followed by fire-gilding using a mercury and gold amalgam.

Authentic pieces feature clear British hallmarks, including a makers mark, standard mark, town mark, and date letter, alongside characteristic hand-chased surface details and appropriate wear.

This piece can be displayed on a bookshelf or mantelpiece as a decorative metal accent, contrasting textures against contemporary surfaces while bringing historical character to the room.

Silver gilt items require gentle cleaning with specialised non-abrasive silver cleaners, avoiding harsh dips or excessive rubbing that could compromise the delicate gold wash layer.
