Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Georgian Revival bureau bookcase from 1910 displays a warm brown mahogany timber finish with intricate floral marquetry inlay across the fall-front desk and three graduated lower drawers. The upper section comprises a raised swan-neck pediment and a pair of glazed doors fitted with astragal glazing bars enclosing adjustable shelves. Brass swan-neck handles accent the drawers, which sit above shaped bracket feet, while a white tassel hangs from the central brass dust strip between the cabinet doors. The piece measures 225 cm high, 85 cm wide, and 48 cm deep. Suitable for use in a traditional library, study, or sophisticated living room, this functional item provides both display space and a practical writing station. The fall-front desk drops down to reveal a fitted interior and leather writing surface, combining upper cabinetry with lower storage in a single upright footprint. The vertical proportions make it ideal for positioning against a main wall, bringing classic British craftsmanship and decorative marquetry details into a domestic interior.

FAQs

A bureau bookcase is a combined piece of furniture featuring a slant-front or fall-front writing desk beneath an upper enclosed glass cabinet or bookcase. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these multi-functional designs offered compact storage for correspondence, documents, and literature.

These pieces were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, often finished with satinwood or boxwood marquetry inlays. Glazed doors incorporate glass panels held by timber glazing bars, accompanied by cast brass handles and escutcheons.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints on drawer linings, natural oxidisation on unpainted interior timber, and original brass lock mechanisms. Decorative marquetry and stringing are set flush into the veneer rather than printed onto the surface.

A bureau bookcase serves as a functional focal point in a home office, study, or reception room. The upper glazed cabinet provides space for displaying books or ceramics, while the drop-down desk flap forms a compact workstation for daily use.

Dust surfaces regularly using a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year following the timber grain. Avoid placing the item near direct heat sources or in direct sunlight to prevent veneer movement and fading.
