Victorian christening mugs gained immense popularity during the 19th century as traditional gifts given to newborns or at christening ceremonies, often intended as heirloom pieces to be used and passed down through generations.

These items are typically crafted from sterling silver, featuring hand-engraved or chased decorative motifs, and often incorporate a gilded interior known as wash-gilt to protect the silver from acidic liquids.

Authenticity is verified through clear hallmarks stamped on the metal, which typically include a makers mark, a standard mark for sterling silver, a town mark indicating the assay office such as Birmingham, and a date letter corresponding to the specific year of manufacture.

In a contemporary home, such an object can be utilised as a decorative desk accessory, a small vase for short-stemmed florals, or displayed prominently within a cabinet as part of a curated collection of antique metals.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using a high-quality, non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to maintain its patina, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can strip away desirable historic oxidisation.
