Description

This beautiful, small-size Turkmen rug was made by a Teke woman, possibly as a dowry rug, during the third quarter of the nineteenth century. The beautiful madder brick-red ground colour is magnificent - a colour I am always searching to find in these special pieces - but such pieces are rare. This rug contains three vertical rows of six Teke 'guls' or tribal crests and is in excellent condition. A truly fabulous rug.

Size: 1.60m x 1.15m (5' 3" x 3' 9").

Turkmen rugs are traditional hand-woven textiles produced by nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes of Central Asia, particularly the Teke, Ersari, and Yomut tribes, prized for their distinct geometric designs and deep cultural symbolism.

Authentic pieces are typically constructed with handspun sheeps wool for the pile, warp, and weft, often utilizing natural vegetable dyes to achieve characteristic deep madder red tones and dark accents.

Authentication involves examining the density of the knotting, the use of natural dyes with consistent abrash, the specific structure of the selvages, and the presence of traditional tribal guls and elem borders.

These textiles serve as striking focal points in contemporary spaces, pairing well with neutral upholstery, minimalist architecture, and natural wood furnishings to add warmth and texture.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without the beater bar, keeping them out of direct sunlight to prevent dye fading, and utilizing professional specialist cleaning services for periodic maintenance.
