Size: 6ft 4in x 4ft 4in (193 x 131cm).

Antique Ersari Turkmen ensi of traditional design with excellent colour.

Circa 1880.

Ensi were door hangings used to cover the entrance to a yurt.

This example is woven with a traditional Ersari design; the four panels in the middle are said to be the windows to Paradise, these are filled with bird heads. A feature of this ensi are the superb elem panels at the base and the complete fine kilim end panel.

The ensi is in good condition with slight even wear and good pile.

The ensi has been hand washed and is ready for use or display, the rug is suitable for normal domestic use.

An Ensi is a specialised woven textile created by nomadic Turkmen tribes to serve as a curtain or hanging over the entrance of a yurt. They are characterized by a quadripartite or cruciform central design field, often called a hatchli pattern, symbolising the separation between the outer world and the home interior.

Turkmen weavers primarily used locally sourced, hand-spun sheep wool for both the warp, weft, and pile. The rich reddish-brown and crimson tones were derived from natural madder root, complemented by indigo blues, walnuts, and natural un-dyed ivory wool.

Authentic 19th-century Turkmen rugs feature hand-spun wool construction, natural vegetable dye colour variation (abashment), asymmetric knotting, and specific tribal motifs known as guls or hatchli designs. The back of the rug reveals fine hand-knotted structure rather than machine uniformity.

A Turkmen Ensi rug functions well as a focal accent on dark hardwood floors or layered over natural sisal carpeting. Due to their original function as entrance hangings, these textiles can also be mounted on walls as tapestry artwork in living rooms, hallways, or studies.
