Size: 5ft 5in x 4ft 0in (165 x 122cm).

Antique Yomut Turkmen Ensi with eagle and tree elem design.

Circa 1880.

A good Yomut Turkmen ensi (Yurt door hanging). This example has rich colour and two beautifully drawn elem (base) panels. The upper elem is of large stylised eagles and the lower panel is trees on a dark indigo blue ground. The outer border and central panel border is of the 'tuning fork' design. The four central panels (windows to paradise) are filled with typical Yomut style shrubs.

Good condition with even wear and medium pile, the ensi has fine weave and good wool.

Hand washed and ready for display.

An Ensi is a specific style of textile traditionally woven by Turkmen nomadic tribes in Central Asia to serve as a door hanging for yurt entrances. Characterised by a four-part central field design known as a hatchli cross, these pieces served both functional insulation purposes and symbolic spiritual protection.

Authentic Yomut rugs were hand-knotted using locally sourced hand-spun sheeps wool for both the pile and the foundation structure. The rich dark red, liver brown, and navy shades were derived using natural vegetable and mineral dyes, including madder root and indigo.

Authentic Yomut pieces feature a distinctive dark red or liver-toned palette, specific knotting structures (typically asymmetric knots), and a quadripartite central field structure. They also feature a broad lower decorative border panel, known as an elem, which contains repeated geometric motifs.

A Turkmen Ensi works well as an accent floor rug in a study, entryway, or sitting area, introducing depth and historical pattern. Alternatively, these textiles can be mounted on a wall as decorative fibre art to accentuate architectural features.

Keep the rug in a dry location out of direct sunlight to prevent colour fading. Vacuum gently without a rotating brush attachment, rotate periodically to distribute wear evenly, and use a high-quality rug pad underneath to protect the warp and weft fibres.
