This nineteenth-century folk art barge wear toleware log box is a practical piece of hearthside furniture made from painted iron and brass. The dark black body takes an angled bin form with a hinged lid, accented by a hand-painted floral motif in tones of cream, pink and green on the top surface. Chunky brass drop ring handles are mounted to the sides, providing contrast against the dark finish, while subtle surface wear shows the age of the item. Measuring 33 cm high, 51 cm wide and 38 cm deep, it is sized to sit neatly beside a fireplace to hold logs or coal. Placed on a hearth, this lidded storage container suits a rustic farmhouse interior. The dark painted finish and traditional floral artwork bring character to a living room, combining decorative appeal with functional storage near an open fire or wood burner.

Toleware refers to items crafted from thin sheet iron that have been tin-plated, lacquered, or painted, a technique popular throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. These pieces were often decorated with hand-painted floral patterns, japanning, or folk art motifs to serve both functional and decorative domestic purposes.

Traditional toleware containers were constructed from sheet iron or tinware, coated with protective paints or varnishes to prevent rust. Components such as carrying handles and feet were frequently cast from brass or heavy iron for structural durability.

Authentic period pieces typically feature hand-applied paintwork showing age-appropriate wear, hand-riveted or soldered joints, and natural oxidation on unpainted metal surfaces. The weight of the sheet iron and hand-cast brass hardware also distinguish original items from modern reproduction tinwork.

A painted metal log box functions well alongside a fireplace hearth to store firewood, kindling, or fireside tools. It can also be repurposed as a decorative storage container for blankets in a living room or entry hallway.

Clean painted metal surfaces gently using a dry, soft microfibre cloth to avoid lifting delicate hand-painted motifs. Avoid chemical solvents or abrasive cleaners; a thin application of neutral microcrystalline wax can be used to protect the painted finish.
