Description

A Continental bronze on a wooden plinth showing a lion and lioness at play or perhaps flirting. It is probably French, finely cast and quite large as we have tried to show in the photos. It weighs 8.1 kg.

It is unsigned but in the style of Pierre-Jules Mêne. It is a lovely bronze and one that would have been more expensive had it been signed.

The patina is good and we estimate it to be circa 1900.

We can deliver free of charge in UK mainland and can calculate the cost for International delivery.

Payment by bank transfer, PayPal or card via telephone .

Date of Manufacture

Jane Short Antiques has dated this Bronze Lion Sculpture to the 1900s.

The animalier movement originated in 19th-century France, focusing on the realistic and dynamic portrayal of animals, particularly wild beasts in combat or repose, pioneered by sculptors such as Antoine-Louis Barye.

Traditional bronze figures are produced using the lost-wax casting method, where a wax model is encased in a mould, melted out, and replaced with molten bronze before being finished with a chemical patination.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit heavy weight, hand-chased surface details, multi-layered patination with natural oxidisation, and occasionally foundry marks or artist signatures cast into the base.

Such pieces serve as strong focal points on a dark wood desk, a library mantelpiece, or a dedicated display cabinet, contrasting against clean, contemporary architectural lines.

Bronze should be dusted gently with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and occasionally treated with a microcrystalline wax to protect the patination from moisture and handling oils; water and chemical solvents must be avoided.
