Description

This attractive 1920s desk lamp appears to have its original green glass shade still in situ and is in excellent condition. Its metallic surface has been unburnished as it retains an appealing antique patina. Its cleverly designed flexible brass stem makes adjustment easy and the lamp has been rewired sympathetically and safety tested. Originally its decorated brass base would have sat directly on to a surface, however, to offer more protection we have turned a piece of antique mahogany and secured it to the underside of the lamp's base. A disc of old leather has been applied to the polished wooden base as a finishing touch. A lovely period desk lamp. Measurements below are approximate - accurate measurements will be listed shortly. The approximate height and width are the suggested measurements for the lamp when it is in a similar position to how it's pictured in the photographs.

Dealers Notes

Whenever possible Culvertons undertake the carriage of items within London and the home counties. Professional, competitive and trusted couriers and shipping companies are engaged for deliveries for the remainder of our customers. Smaller items, when instructed, will be carefully parcelled and securely sent by the carrier.

We strive to accurately describe and illustrate our stock on the 'Selling Antiques' website. However, we understand that it is not always possible to judge from photographs how an item will look in the home or garden. For this reason, if notified within seven days from the date of delivery we offer a full refund (less any agreed carriage costs) once the item has been returned in the same condition as it left our premises.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

Adjustable desk lamps emerged during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries to meet the growing demand for focused task lighting in offices, studies, and libraries.

These lamps were typically constructed from solid brass, bronze, or cast iron bases, often paired with hand-blown glass shades, such as cased glass or opaline green glass.

Authentic pieces usually feature heavy cast metal components, period-appropriate wiring methods, hand-threaded fittings, and natural patination on the metal surfaces rather than uniform modern finishes.

Placing a vintage metal and glass lamp on a modern wooden desk or sideboard adds functional task lighting while introducing historical contrast and texture to the space.

Dust the surfaces gently with a dry microfibre cloth, avoid using harsh chemical polishes that can strip the historic patina, and ensure the electrical components are periodically inspected by a qualified professional.
