Seventeenth-century coffers were foundational items in domestic interiors, primarily utilised for storing textiles, valuables, and documents before fitted wardrobes became common.

These pieces were constructed predominantly from solid English oak, frequently employing pegged frame-and-panel techniques and hand-forged iron hardware.

Authenticity is determined by examining hand-cut joints, traditional tool marks, the natural oxidisation of the timber, and ironwork consistent with period blacksmithing.

Such pieces function effectively as functional storage elements at the foot of a bed, as coffee tables, or as accent furniture in living spaces.

Preservation requires maintaining stable humidity levels away from direct heat sources and treating the timber periodically with traditional beeswax.
