FAQs

Camphorwood trunks originated in China, particularly during the Qing dynasty, and were heavily exported to the West during the 19th century as sea chests for traders and sailors due to the woods natural insect-repellent properties.

These trunks are crafted from solid camphor wood, known for its distinct aromatic scent, and feature hand-carved relief panels depicting landscapes or maritime scenes, typically joined with traditional corner box joints and fitted with brass hardware.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit hand-carved details rather than machine milling, traditional brass or copper hardware with patination, hand-cut dovetail or finger joints, and interior construction consistent with period workshop practices.

Position the trunk at the foot of a bed or use it as a coffee table to introduce organic texture, historical contrast, and practical storage into contemporary living spaces.

Maintain the wood by avoiding direct sunlight and excessive humidity, dusting with a dry cloth, and occasionally refreshing the interior with fine sandpaper if the natural scent needs reviving.
