Description

This quirky yet stylish asymmetrical limed oak low bookcase really evokes the period in which it was manufactured. It was one of a number of limed oak bookcases we were lucky to acquire from a Surrey residence. As you can see from the images, the surface of the underlying oak has a warm appealing honey tone, making this bookcase a perfect candidate if you are looking to furnish a period or contemporary interior. It will also sit comfortably with Heal's furniture from the 1920s and 30s. The shelves (height 20cm) will happily accommodate standard paperbacks and treasured mementoes.

Dealers Notes

Whenever possible Culvertons undertake the carriage of items within London and the home counties. Professional, competitive and trusted couriers and shipping companies are engaged for deliveries for the remainder of our customers. Smaller items, when instructed, will be carefully parcelled and securely sent by the carrier.

We strive to accurately describe and illustrate our stock on the 'Selling Antiques' website. However, we understand that it is not always possible to judge from photographs how an item will look in the home or garden. For this reason, if notified within seven days from the date of delivery we offer a full refund (less any agreed carriage costs) once the item has been returned in the same condition as it left our premises.

These movements emphasised honest construction, functional design, and the natural grain of timber, often drawing inspiration from simplicity and utility rather than heavy Victorian ornamentation.

Furniture of this type was typically crafted from solid English or European oak, often treated with a liming finish to highlight the open grain and provide a pale, weathered appearance.

Authenticity is generally determined by traditional joinery methods, such as dovetails and tenons, tool marks indicative of hand-finishing, timber shrinkage patterns, and maker marks or style characteristics associated with firms like Heal & Son.

Such pieces function well as architectural focal points; balance the asymmetric shelves with a curated mix of vertical books, ceramics, and negative space to maintain a clean visual composition.

Maintain stable indoor humidity and temperature levels away from direct sunlight and heat sources, and periodically nourish the wood with a traditional microcrystalline wax rather than modern silicone polishes.
