Description

A wonderful and rare 19th century ash and elm cutlers stool with hand turned ribbed legs making this stool specific to Sheffield area. What makes this stool rather unusual is that it appears to have a period modification and fitted with a pine back support. I have had a couple of these stools in the past and have never seen one with this design. A nice attractive tone and wear throughout with no signs of repair.

A Sheffield cutlers stool is a traditional piece of vernacular seating historically used by artisans and metalworkers in the industrial workshops of South Yorkshire during the 18th and 19th centuries. These utilitarian seats were specifically constructed to withstand rigorous daily use in artisanal trades.

These items are typically constructed from native British timbers such as oak, elm, ash, and pine, featuring pegged joints, saddle-shaped seats, and robust tripod or four-legged bases designed for stability on uneven workshop floors.

Authentic pieces exhibit period-appropriate tool marks, historical surface wear, oxidisation of the timber, and pegged construction methods rather than modern metal fixings or adhesives.

This type of seating can be integrated into contemporary spaces as a functional desk seat, a plant stand, or a sculptural accent piece that introduces historical texture and honest materiality to minimalist rooms.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and applying microcrystalline wax periodically to nourish the historic timber surface without altering its natural patina.
