FAQs

Old Sheffield Plate is an early form of silver plating created by fusing a thin sheet of silver to a thicker copper core using heat and pressure, a technique invented in the 18th century.

Georgian wine coasters typically combined fused silver plate rims with turned wooden bases, frequently made from mahogany or oak, often featuring a central button for mounting.

Authentic pieces often exhibit a faint copper bleed where the base metal shows through wear along high points, and they usually lack standard sterling silver hallmarks, occasionally bearing makers marks.

They can be repurposed on a dining table or sideboard to hold small decorative items, candles, or glassware, adding historical texture and metallic contrast to contemporary spaces.

Clean the silver surfaces gently with a non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth, avoiding harsh chemical dips that can damage the thin silver layer, and keep the wooden base dry.
