19th century
Description

Royal House Antiques is delighted to offer for sale this important, hand made in England, flamed Mahogany Wellington chest of drawers with bookcase middle

Please note the delivery fee listed is just a guide, it covers within the M25 only for the UK and local Europe only for international, if you would like an accurate quote please send me your postcode and I’ll provide you with the exact price.

This is one of the finest quality antiques I have ever seen, the timber patina is sublime, absolutely exquisite in every way shape and form, the carvings, cuts of wood used, everything is first class, this would have been a no expense spared commission for a very important family.

A Wellington chest is a tall chest of drawers with a lockable side panel, the smaller versions are around 100cm with the taller versions coming in at approximately 130cm, this piece is over 150cm tall and has as you can see, a pair of Wellington chests which house an open library bookcase in the middle

The condition is very very good, we have cleaned waxed and polished it from top to bottom, there may be some age and use related patina marks here and there as you would expect from a piece 190+ years old, nothing that detracts from the charm and charisma

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Wellington chest, named after the First Duke of Wellington, traditionally features a tall, narrow column of drawers secured by a hinged side locking flap. Variations incorporating open bookcases combine central open shelving with flanking columns of drawers for library storage.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid mahogany, featuring high-grade flame mahogany veneers on drawer fronts and exterior panels. Internal drawer linings often utilised oak or pine joined with hand-cut dovetails.

Authentic 19th-century examples feature hand-carved detailing, hand-dovetailed drawer construction, original brass or turned wooden knobs, and a vertical hinged locking stile that secures the column of drawers simultaneously.

Position the piece against a neutral backdrop to highlight the rich wood grain, pairing dark mahogany tones with modern art above the top surface and curated literature on the central shelves.

Keep the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement or veneer lifting. Apply a high-quality natural beeswax polish along the grain twice yearly to maintain the surface finish.
