Edwardian Breakfront Bookcase

1900 - 1920
Description

A beautiful solid oak breakfront bookcase from the Edwardian period. Sat on very bold ogee bracket feet which sweep up into four full length astragal glazed doors, the bottom panels to the sides having wonderfully carved urns and foliage, The corresponding carving is set within the superb cornice which terminate in the original pediments. There is a great amount of shelving which is all adjustable. Other features that befit this fine piece are the reeded canted corners that rise into the dentil cornice which also has crisply carved detail to the corners. Although large and heavy, it does break down into manageable pieces for transportation and setting up. In fantastic condition all cleaned and polished ready to enjoy. P.S the uppermost pediment is 24cm = 9 1/2 inches and would lift off if you had problems with the height of the bookcase.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A breakfront bookcase is a large storage cabinet characterised by a central section that projects forward beyond the flanking side wings. Popularised in 18th-century Britain, these pieces continued to be produced through the Edwardian period to house expansive private libraries.

Edwardian breakfront bookcases were predominantly crafted using hardwoods such as solid oak, mahogany, or walnut. Construction typically incorporated dovetail joints, glass panels with geometric wood astragal glazing bars, and carved timber pediments.

Authentic Edwardian pieces often feature neoclassical motifs, balanced proportions, and geometric astragal glazing patterns. Inspection of drawer construction, hand-planed backboards, brass cabinet fittings, and natural wood oxidisation helps verify period origin.

A breakfront bookcase creates a central focal point in a dining room, study, or expansive living area. Combining literary volumes with curated ceramics, sculptural objects, and framed artwork creates a balanced display that bridges classic and modern aesthetics.

Dust timber surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax polish periodically along the grain to preserve the wood finish. Clean glass panels using a lint-free cloth and mild glass cleaner, ensuring liquids do not contact surrounding wooden glazing bars.
