This Victorian Bohemian scent bottle originates from circa 1890. Constructed from cranberry and clear glass with a silver mount, the piece takes a rectangular form with faceted shoulders, a scalloped base, and a cut-to-clear casing design. The hinged metal cap features embossed and chased floral scrolls, while the inner neck holds an original clear glass stopper. Measuring 8.5 cm high, 3.5 cm wide, and 2 cm deep, the body displays a rich red colour alongside clear sections and a shiny silver finish. Positioned on a bedside table, the accessory adds traditional Victorian character to a bedroom dressing area or a bathroom vanity shelf. The item serves as a decorative storage container for perfume, holding personal fragrances within domestic spaces.

Popular during the late nineteenth century, overlay cranberry glass scent bottles were personal vanity items created by casing clear glass with a layer of gold-infused red glass before cutting geometric patterns through to the transparent base.

Craftsmen fused a coloured outer layer of glass onto a clear glass core, which was then hand-cut on abrasive wheels to reveal the underlying clear glass, completed with chased or embossed silver caps.

Authentic pieces feature crisp hand-cut facet edges, variable hand-blown weight, polished pontil marks on the base, and period silver hallmarks or makers marks on the mounts.

Position the bottle on a dressing table tray, bathroom counter, or bedside table alongside framed artwork and vanity items where natural light highlights the glass colour.

Clean the glass interior with warm water and soft brushes, avoiding harsh chemicals, while gently cleaning the silver top with a specialised silver polishing cloth to prevent tarnish.
