Large 19th Century Old Sheffield Plated Beer Jug

19th century
Description

A large Old Sheffield Plated beer jug. Bearing no makers mark but is visibly seamed and dates to c1820-1860. As with many of these jugs it has possibly been converted from a tankard (the spout appears to be electroplated). It remains however, a highly impressive and useable object.

Condition is very good overall with no dents. There are signs of copper bleed to the raised edges and slight faint plate wear to the spout. The interior is very clean.

Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Old Sheffield Plate refers to a manufacturing process developed in the 18th century where a layer of sterling silver was fused onto a copper ingot prior to rolling it into sheets for crafting objects.

These vessels were crafted using fused silver and copper sheets, featuring reeded banding for structural reinforcement alongside hand-soldered handles, spouts, and hinged lids.

Authentic pieces frequently display subtle copper exposure where the outer silver layer has worn through over time, accompanied by visible hand-finished seams and turned bases.

A silver jug can serve as a decorative centerpiece for fresh floral displays on a dining table or sit as an accent piece upon a sideboard or drinks cabinet.

Clean the surface gently using a soft cloth and specialized silver polish formulated specifically for plated metals, avoiding abrasive compounds that strip the outer silver layer.
