Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Georgian dowry chest on stand is an 18th-century wooden storage trunk elevated on a dedicated frame or leg base. Historically made to hold a brides household linens and valuables, these chests feature hinged lids and sturdy carrying handles for transportation.

These chests were primarily constructed from solid dense hardwoods such as mahogany or oak, often lined with pine or cedar. High-status examples feature decorative and functional cast brass corner brackets, brass drop handles, and steel lock mechanisms.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, uneven hand-planed timber surfaces, and original brass hardware showing natural surface oxidisation. The primary timber typically demonstrates a deep patina, and the interior secondary wood will show characteristic age marks and hand-sawing lines.

A chest on stand functions effectively as a focal point in an entrance hall, behind a sofa, or placed at the foot of a bed. Its elevated profile creates visual lightness while offering practical concealed storage for extra linens, blankets, or household items.

Maintain the finish by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a pure beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the wood grain. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent timber shrinkage or cracking, and allow brass mounts to retain their natural aged patina rather than using harsh chemical cleaners.
