An attractive William and Mary chinoiserie lacquer cabinet on a splendid George III black and gilt stand made in the manner of Thomas Chippendale.
Bears the label for Mrs J. O''Brien, Empress Club, 35 Dover St: a grand London Ladies Club founded in 1897 and boasting 2 drawing rooms in Louis XV style and Venetian style, an impressive two-story dining room, a smoking room, library and a staircase decorated with stained glass windows depicting Shakespearian heroines; the internal slides of the cabinet would appear to date from the club''s period, replacing the earlier fitted drawers.
The cabinet has been sympathetically cleaned and minor restoration carried out and the stand has had the original gilt decoration restored in places where it was worn.
