This Jacobean period oak coffer is constructed in dark brown timber with a rich patina. The rectangular hinged top comprises two panels above a frieze decorated with carved lunettes and a central brass keyhole escutcheon. Below, the front features two carved panels enclosing central rose medallions framed by lozenge motifs, complemented by carved sides and a crenellated bottom rail raised on original turned feet. Measuring 57 cm high, 96 cm wide and 51 cm deep, the chest provides practical enclosed storage. Suitable for use in a living room, hallway or bedroom, the coffer functions as a storage trunk, occasional table or blanket box while adding traditional English Country House character to interior schemes. Its compact proportions allow it to sit easily against walls, beneath windows or at the foot of a bed.

A coffer is a sturdy wooden chest with a hinged lid, historically used for storing clothing, linens, and household valuables. Early examples were constructed from solid timber panels, often featuring decorative hand-carved details.

Traditional coffers were primarily built using solid English oak joined with mortise and tenon joints secured by wooden pegs. The front panels frequently featured relief carving, such as lozenges or lunettes, and were fitted with iron or brass locks.

Authentic period coffers exhibit hand-hewn oak timber, irregular tool marks, wooden peg joinery, and natural wear around the feet and handles. The oxidisation of the wood inside the chest typically shows a dark, aged patina.

A carved oak coffer serves as practical storage in a hallway, entryway, or at the foot of a bed. Its deep wood tones provide a grounding historical contrast when placed alongside contemporary minimalist furnishings.

Preserve solid oak by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying a beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the timbers hydration. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent timber movement or cracking.
