This 19th-century French Empire style table lamp is rendered in black and gold through a combination of brass and bronze metal. The piece incorporates a dark patinated fluted column, gilt metal accents, and a triform base elevated on paw feet, complemented by acanthus leaf ornamentation and turned sections. It measures 62 cm high, 15 cm wide, and 15 cm deep, offering a compact vertical silhouette suited for display on a sideboard top. Placement in a modern home works well in a traditional living room, study, or hallway where a classical accent piece is desired. The lamp provides functional surface lighting while introducing period character through its architectural form and contrasting metallic finishes.

FAQs

These lamps typically incorporate classical Neoclassical motifs derived from ancient Greek, Roman, and Egyptian architecture, featuring fluted columns, triform bases, and dark bronze paired with gilt brass accents.

Period lamps were primarily crafted using cast bronze, brass, ormolu, marble, and patinated metals, often combined to create contrast between polished gilt surfaces and dark patinas.

Look for evidence of early candle or oil lamp construction, such as threaded central rods, hand-chased metalwork, natural wear on high-touch areas, and drill holes where electrical wiring was later added.

Position the lamp on a wooden sideboard, console table, or writing desk alongside contemporary art or textured ceramics to create a layered interior scheme.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners or abrasive polishes, which can strip away the original aged patina and gilt finishes.
