A mule chest is a transitional piece of furniture originating in the 17th and 18th centuries that combines a traditional lift-top blanket chest with one or more drawers at the base, serving as a precursor to the chest of drawers.

These chests were constructed primarily from solid English oak using traditional joinery methods such as mortise and tenon joints, hand-planed panels, and pegged construction, often featuring brass or iron escutcheons.

Authentication involves examining the timber for hand-tool marks, hand-cut dovetails in the drawer construction, period-appropriate hardware, and natural timber shrinkage and oxidisation consistent with centuries of age.

An antique mule chest provides functional storage and historical contrast when placed in a modern living space as a coffee table substitute, a hallway storage unit, or a focal point beneath artwork.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent timber splitting, and occasionally treating the wood with microcrystalline wax to nourish the surface.
