17th Century William and Mary burr walnut cabinet on chest, circa 1690. England. Concealing two secret compartments.
The Cabinet
The cross-grain cornice neatly conceals a full-length hidden drawer known as a cushion drawer and two concealed secret compartments. Over two feather-banded break arch doors, opening to a wonderful arrangement of highly figured walnut long and short drawers, each finely feather-banded and lined in oak around a central cupboard concealing a further three drawers, each retaining the original rapusee back plates and ring-pull handles.
The Chest
Moulded to the waist over two short and two long burr/fiddle-back walnut feather-banded oak lined drawers, divided by cross-grain D-mouldings, raised on a cross-grain ogee moulding and bun feet.
The sides are veneered in book-matched figured walnut and cross-banded.
This is a very beautiful and accomplished example of fantastic colour, patination and originality.
