17th Century Dragon Carved Oak Court Cupboard Dated 1695

17th century
Description

A 17th Century solid oak press cupboard with secret drawer and dragon and foliate carved panels. Lovely rich colour and patina. The canopy carved to the centre the initials FJ and the date '95 (1695).

Well executed carving to both upper and lower case with the dragons, foliate and floral designs mirrored in the canopy and all four doors.

Two upper cupboards above three freize drawers and two large lower cupboards with a single shelf in each. The central drawer with lock and working key and when removed there is a secret drawer behind and below this a drawer with well hidden oak cover. Handles and escutcheons are brass replacement, some oak boards to the very top and the turned bun feet are old replacements. Otherwise original and in solid very robust and handsome condition.

A really good example, probably Wales/Shropshire, of a late 17th Century press.

Dimensions are: 60 inches high, 61 inches wide, and 20 inches deep. Height of feet is 6 inches, height of lower case is 34.5 inches and height of upper case is 25.5 inches. The press dismantles into upper and lower sections for transport. Internal height of the drawers is 4 inches.

For metric multiply all dimensions by 2.5

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
