Early 20th Century Carved Oak Bureau

1900 - 1920
Description

A stunning carved oak bureau which was part of an extensive suite. This bureau is extensively carved to the whole of the front and sits on a sturdy stretchered base. The gallery top has a plate glass. The interior is typical of the very best, with it's compartments, drawers, pen tray and original ink wells. All of this moves in and out as you pull down the fall of the bureau and is known as a cantilever mechanism. The leather writing surface is original and the working locks both have keys and work as they should. If the interior wasn't enough, you open the base cupboards to reveal three beautiful drawers all with polished nickel swan neck handles. The whole piece is very clean and as such we believe has seen very little use and was probably a parlour piece (best Sunday room).

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An early 20th-century carved oak bureau is a compact writing desk featuring a sloped drop-down writing flap above a cupboard or set of drawers. This era frequently incorporated Revivalist design details, combining traditional craftsmanship with functional domestic storage.

These pieces are constructed primarily from solid oak or oak veneers, often displaying hand-carved floral or geometric cartouches. Internal joints typically feature dovetail construction, with turned feet, stretchers, and period ironmongery.

Authentic examples show natural wear along the writing flap hinges, aged patination across handles, and period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut or early machine dovetails. Unfinished secondary timbers like pine or light oak are commonly visible on drawer bottoms and rear panels.

Position the bureau as a functional workstation in a living area, hallway, or home office, pairing it with a simple contemporary chair. Incorporating modern brass lighting or neutral ceramic decorative objects on top creates balance against the detailed wood carvings.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth, and apply a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the grain and retain the carved relief details. Avoid positioning the item adjacent to direct heat sources or in environments with fluctuating humidity.
