Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Toleware refers to lacquered or painted sheet metal decorative items, a craft that flourished in eighteenth-century France under the name tole peinte. Toleware lighting fixtures combined functional durability with intricate hand-painted polychrome decoration and gilded highlights, often commissioned for townhouse entryways and grand residences.

Traditional French lanterns were constructed using hand-formed sheet iron or tinplate, finished with cold-applied paint enamels and decorative gold leaf. The structure housed glass panels to protect flame sources, suspended via hand-wrought iron loops and scrollwork.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of natural age, including minor surface oxidisation where paint has worn, hand-soldered frame joints, and slight variations in hand-blown glass panels. Original gilding typically shows wear around raised scrollwork and leaf details rather than a uniform modern finish.

A French toleware lantern works effectively as a focal point in a neutral entryway, above a stairwell, or centred over a kitchen dining space. Pairing the structured metal frame with understated contemporary furnishings highlights the classical foliage motifs.

Dust the frame regularly with a soft brush or dry microfibre cloth. Avoid using water, liquid polishes, or chemical solvents, as these strip fragile gilding and historic painted surfaces.
