During the Meiji period (18681912), Japanese craftspeople refined the technique of cloisonne enamel, producing vessels featuring intricate depictions of nature. Many of these decorative vases were later adapted into electric table lamps during the twentieth century to suit Western interior lighting demands.

These lamps are constructed from a copper or bronze base with fine brass wires creating individual cells (cloisons). These cells are filled with coloured vitreous glass enamels, fired, polished, and later fitted with cast brass or gilt metal mounts and electrical components.

Authentic Meiji cloisonne exhibits delicate, thin wirework, smooth polished finishes without surface pitting, and complex naturalistic motifs such as birds or flora. The underlying metalwork and interior base often show signs of age-appropriate oxidisation and hand-finishing.

Positioning a symmetrical pair on a side cabinet, console table, or sideboard creates visual balance and introduces historic texture. Pairing them with contemporary neutral walls allows the detailed enamel patterns and subtle background tones to serve as decorative focal points.
