FAQs

Carnival glass is pressed glass treated with metallic salts during manufacturing to create an iridescent lustre. It originated in the United States around 1907 and remained widely produced through the 1920s, earning its name as it was frequently awarded as prizes at fairgrounds.

Pieces were produced by pressing molten glass into cast iron moulds containing detailed relief patterns. While the glass remained hot, liquid metallic salts were sprayed onto the surface, followed by re-firing in a kiln to bake in the iridescent finish.

Authentic pieces display distinct mould lines, detailed relief patterns on the exterior or interior, and a metallic, rainbow-like iridescence that cannot be washed away. Base glass colours, such as marigold, green, or amethyst, are visible when held directly to a light source.

Group multiple pieces on a open shelving unit or sideboard to allow natural sunlight to catch the iridescent surfaces. Placing individual ruffled bowls on dark wood surfaces or polished marble creates an effective visual contrast.

Hand wash pieces using lukewarm water, mild liquid soap, and a soft cloth to avoid scratching the iridescent coating. Never place carnival glass in a dishwasher or subject it to sudden temperature changes, which cause thermal shock.
