Vicky Thomas Antiques has dated this piece to the Victorian era.
Opened in 1878, the Winter gardens were designed with an aim ''to place on the land a concert room, promenades, conservatories and other accessories calculated to convert the estate into a pleasant lounge especially desirous during inclement days''.

This little glass and case are contemporary with those early beginnings, and probably were a souvenir to take home after enjoying the splendour and bracing sea air! To look at the picture of the Winter Gardens then, set in an open, almost pastoral landscape it is very different to its modern day town centre aspect - a real social record - and no tower to be seen as that was still to be built!

Both the case and glass are in good 'used' condition, with the gentle wear consistent with their age. There are some scuffs to the wood and some barely visible nips / sharpness to the rim of the glass, and a few bubbles in a vertical band in the glass due to the hand blown nature (I've added a close up photograph of this ). Please see the photos and don't hesitate to get in touch if I can provide any further information.
