We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

This 1920 French Provincial long bedroom stool follows a classic French Chateau style. The piece comprises a beech frame with a painted grey finish, standing on four curved cabriole legs. The carved wooden structure incorporates floral motifs on the legs and along the apron, complemented by a textured braided gimp trim bordering the upholstery. The seat cushion is covered in pink and green damask fabric. The wood shows its original finish, and the entire structure is strong and sturdy with the upholstery remaining in a usable state. Measuring 48 cm high by 100 cm wide and 46 cm deep, this versatile item is suitable for placement at the foot of the bed or positioned as a window seat in a home today.

FAQs

French provincial stools originated in eighteenth-century regional France, adapting the formal court styles of Versailles, such as Louis XV and Louis XVI, into functional seating for country homes. These pieces combined elegant curved forms with durable hardwood frames for domestic use.

Frames were typically constructed from local European hardwoods such as beech, oak, or walnut, which were carved and frequently painted or distempered. The upholstered tops traditionally utilised webbing, horsehair padding, and woven textile coverings like damask or velvet.

Authentic Louis XV style seating is defined by S-curve cabriole legs, hand-carved floral or acanthus motifs on the apron, and asymmetrical rococo detailing. Traditional joinery, such as pegged mortise and tenon joints, is usually visible upon close inspection of the frame.

A long French bench functions effectively positioned at the foot of a bed, beneath a window in a hallway, or placed alongside a dining table as low-profile seating. Pairing painted period timber with contemporary linen or neutral tones balances historical character with modern design.

Clean painted timber frames gently using a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water or solvent-based cleaners that may lift flaking paint. Vacuum fabric upholstery on a low setting using a soft brush attachment to prevent dust build-up within the weave.
