FAQs

Silver christening sets, comprising items such as spoons and food pushers, have been traditional gifts for newborns and infants since the 17th century, originating from the custom of sponsors giving a silver spoon as a token of luck and support.

These pieces are traditionally manufactured from sterling silver, stamped with city assay office hallmarks indicating the year of manufacture, maker, and metal purity, often presented in satin and velvet-lined fitted cases.

Authenticity is verified through official hallmarks stamped directly onto the metal, which include the standard mark for sterling silver, the assay office symbol, the date letter, and the makers mark.

Antique silver sets are frequently displayed within glass-fronted cabinets, on sideboards, or inside decorative presentation boxes as part of a curated collection of familial or historic objects.

Antique silver should be cleaned sparingly using specialised non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cloth to protect the patina, and stored in tarnish-resistant fabrics or low-humidity environments.
