Antique English Georgian Chippendale Style Mahogany Chest on Chest with Linen Cupboard (Circa 1910)

1900 - 1920
Description

Here is a fine quality antique English Georgian Chippendale Style chest on chest, of unusual design, with a small linen cupboard section, constructed from solid mahogany, in the Edwardian period, circa 1910, in excellent original condition. The chest is decorated with profuse geometric blind fretwork carvings beneath the cornice, including the door panels, drawer fronts and front corners of the top section. The top section supports a drop down (detachable) protruding moulded cornice, above two panelled mahogany doors. The left door retains its original brass locking latches, while the right door retains its original brass strip (a sign of quality) and working lever lock (with working key). The two doors open up to reveal an open useful storage area (ideal for storing bedding). Below, is a bank of six graduated drawers, with two drawers to the lower half of the top section and four more drawers to the base section, in a two-over-two configurations. The drawers are constructed with fine hand dovetail joints; the drawer linings and bottoms are constructed from solid oak. The drawer fronts feature the original brass swan neck handles, as well as working locks, with a working key.

The linen press is raised on its original moulded feet (which is rare to see, as these are usually replaced with changing fashions or get damaged over time). The linen press also features the original backboards. The linen press dismantles into three sections (cornice, top and base) allowing easy access up the staircase into the bedroom.

Dimensions:

Total Height = 182.9cm or 72” or 6ft

Top Height = 106.2cm or 41” or 3ft 5”

Top Width = 112.6cm or 44” or 3ft 8”

Top Depth = 52.6cm or 20¾” or 1ft 8¾”

Base Height = 78.7cm or 31” or 2ft 7”

Base Width = 109.9cm or 43¼” or 3ft 7¼”

Base Depth = 53.4cm or 21” or 1ft 9”

The above height dimensions relate to when the top and base are separated. The “total” height is the measurement you require when measuring to make sure it is the correct height for the room.

Condition Report:

This Chippendale style mahogany chest on chest is in excellent original condition. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges, but nothing significant considering its age. Both doors close and lock comfortably. There are no splits to the panelled mahogany doors (which is common in linen presses). The doors lock using the original brass working lever lock (with working key). The drawer fronts retain their original brass swan neck handles & circular escutcheons, as well as working locks, with working key. The press is raised on its original top-quality moulded feet (which is rare to see, as these are usually replaced with changing fashions or get damaged over time). The linen press also features the original backboards. This item is solid in joint and ready to use.
