Victorian William Hutton & Sons Silver Cruet Stand

19th century
For Sale by TJR Trading
Description

This is a late Victorian hallmarked sterling silver cruet stand. It was assayed in London in in 1896 and made by William Hutton & Sons Ltd.

It comprises two small and one large octagonal holders with gadrooned borders and pierced sides. Within the largest there is a clear glass liner. This does fit completely in the gap, rather than sticking out rather than in my photographs. The cruet stand has a single handle with a thumbpiece. This is engraved with a tower. The stand is raised on four ball feet.

The hallmarks are slightly rubbed and the glass liner has a number of chips to the rim. The stand is missing the original pieces that would have sat in the two smaller holders. Other than that it is in good order with wear commensurate with age.

The total silver weight is 62g / 2 ozt.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian silver cruet stand is a tabletop accessory designed to hold condiment containers such as oil, vinegar, salt, pepper, or mustard receptacles. Popularised during the nineteenth century, these stands organised dining essentials while serving as decorative centrepieces for formal dining tables.

These items were predominantly constructed from sterling silver or silver plate, often featuring intricate hand-pierced motifs and cast wireframes. The accompanying bottles and inserts were typically crafted from hand-cut or moulded lead crystal glass.

Authentic British sterling silver examples feature a full set of official hallmarks, including a makers mark, town mark, lion passant quality mark, and a date letter corresponding to the Victorian era. The presence of hand-finished piercing, original ball or scroll feet, and period-appropriate wear on the underside also help verify age.

A silver cruet stand can be placed on a dining room sideboard or kitchen island to serve as a functional or decorative accent. It can also be repurposed on a vanity top to hold small items such as jewellery or perfume bottles.

Clean silver stands gently using a soft, lint-free cloth and a specialised silver polish, avoiding abrasive scrubbers that can scratch the surface. Removable glass liners should be hand-washed separately in lukewarm water with mild dish soap and thoroughly dried before replacing.
