Tekke rugs are hand-knotted carpets produced by the Tekke tribe of Turkmenistan, historically recognised for their fine wool and orderly rows of guls, which are octagonal medallions symbolising tribal identity. Salor guls are specific secondary medallions often incorporated into Tekke designs due to inter-tribal relationships and conquest.

These rugs were traditionally crafted from hand-spun sheep wool with wool or cotton foundation warps andwefts. Natural dyes such as cochineal, madder root, and indigo were utilised to achieve rich reds, deep blues, and ivory accents.

Authenticity is determined by examining the weave density, the quality of the hand-spun wool, characteristic asymmetrical knots, and the oxidisation of natural dyes. Genuine period pieces exhibit subtle irregularities in design execution typical of nomadic weaving.

An antique tribal rug functions effectively as a grounding element in both minimalist and eclectic spaces, pairing well with clean-lined modern furniture or rich leather pieces. Its strong geometric patterns add texture and historical depth to polished hardwood or stone floors.

Preservation requires regular gentle vacuuming without beater bars, professional hand-washing by specialists in antique textiles, and protection from direct sunlight to prevent dye fading. Using a breathable rug underlay also prevents friction wear against the floor.
