Two Pairs of Apothecary Armorial Vases

19th century
Description

Two pairs of stoneware armorial vases. One pair 13 inches high the other 11.5 inches high. Both pairs are externally glazed and bear the same armorials front and back. The foliate decoration around the armorials are of pomegranates and corn husks. They are not glazed internally and do not hold water. Their use and origin is unknown but the Greeks and other Mediterranean countries held pomegranates in high esteem and these may have been used for the storage of pomegranate seeds. More research is required on the armorials and styles of the vases to ascertain their origin and use. The smaller vases have simple stub handles with lions mask decoration below. The higher vases have scroll decoration to the stub handles (see photographs). The type of handle would suggest lifting from the ground upwards rather than pouring.

They are extremely decorative and very interesting. They are comparatively heavy and coarse in their construction....definitely hand made but the decoration is well executed.

Pair one 33.5 cm high and 24 cm max diameter

Pair two 29 cm high and 24 cm max in diameter.
