A Fine Chinese Transitional Blue and White Sleeve Vase, Circa 1640

17th century
Description

For sale a very fine Chinese Transitional blue and white sleeve vase of cylindrical form tapering slightly towards the unglazed foot and rising to a short, waisted neck with everted rim, well painted in varying tones of cobalt blue with Zhongkui shown seated on a stag, the bearded demon queller with head turned to look at his frequent companion, a bat, soaring above to witness the subjugation of a threatening demon, all between bands of incised foaming waves and below a border of bamboo butterfly and water Lilly. Wear to rim and body, rim possibly slightly reduced, various iron spots and bust glaze markings to body along with visible potting marks. Size approx. 32.5cm tall
