As part of our Japanese works of art collection we are delighted to offer this very large and highly decorative pair of vases from the late 19th century Meiji period and signed by the Fukagawa company at a time when they were collaborating with the well known Koransha company , the vases were certainly made prior to 1894 according to the style of the Fukagawa signature, these large and imposing vases have been situated in a large arts and crafts house near Chepstow called Pen Moel , the house contents and indeed the house itself having recently been put up for sale , the decoration depicts Samurai and other figures upon a bridge , with a backdrop of Edo bay , the borders are further decorated with stylised clouds, Butterflies, Peonies and pomegranates, the sides also depict panels of Ho-Ho birds (Phoenix) , a very well painted border of Lotus encircles the base whilst the interior rims are further decorated with flora and Butterflies , the vibrant enamel detailing throughout these vases has ensured that even with a century of cleaning they have remained colourful and highly decorative items , they sit on a fantastic quality pair of contemporary hardwood bases with super hairy paw carved feet.

These imposing vases would require a large room , hallway or foyer to display them at their best , the condition is excellent with no damages or restorations and only light expected gilt rubbings from over a century of cleaning !!
