This is a good quality antique George III Welsh housekeeper’s hanging cupboard, circa 1780.

Constructed in the traditional peg construction method, the hanging cupboard itself boasts an elegant protruding cornice to the upper section above two large fielded panel oak cupboard doors. The cupboard doors feature a working lock and a key with two small brass knobs and brass escutcheons. Inside, there is a bank of wooden hooks around the perimeter of the internal cupboard to hang jackets from. As this cupboard has a narrow depth (50.5cm or 19?”) it is ideal for a narrow hallway for storing jackets, umbrellas, hats and shoes. Below the cupboard doors is a bank of three sham drawers. Further below, are two large oak-lined and hand dovetailed working drawers. The sides of the cupboard also boast lovely oak fielded panel sides with peg a construction. The cupboard stands on its original styles. The cupboard dismantles into two sections for easy transportation.

As this item boasts the original polish, it has a fantastic colour and patination; this can only be achieved through age and the years of care and cleaning they have received.

The cupboard has good proportions which makes it a sought after size; it was designed to fit into narrow rooms such as hallways. The cupboard dismantles into two sections for easy transport and access into the house.

Condition Report:

This item is in excellent working condition. The cupboard doors feature a working lock and a key. There is no key for the two lower drawers. The cupboard dismantles into two sections for easy transportation - both parts of the cupboard are original to each other. The brassware on the cupboard is old replacements. The cupboard features the original polish, which is why the colour and patination of this cupboard is superb. Nominal old use marks to the leading edges but nothing significant considering the age of the item. The item is solid in joint and ready to use.

Dimensions:

Height = 199cm or 78?” or 6ft 6?”

Width (cornice) = 144.2cm or 56¾” or 4ft 8¾”
