Small and rare Elizabethan Welsh oak chest or coffer. The solid lid has gouged decoration on the sides, and sits above a panelled base. The front panels and framework are profusely and energetically carved with deeply-cut stylized plant designs which are further embellished with punched decoration.
The hinges have been replaced with hand-wrought iron hinges. The centre of the top rail has been carved to fill the former lock plate (see close-up). The internal till is missing and the baseboards replaced. Parts of the feet have been re-built.
