Large, Quality Mahogany, Victorian Antique Linen Press Stamped - W. Priest

19th century
Description

Large, Quality Mahogany, Victorian Antique Linen Press Stamped - W. Priest

This stunning, large, antique mahogany linen press dates from around 1840, is of super quality and is stamped W. Priest, 1&2 Tudor St., Blackfriars. Priest was known as an auctioneer, retailer and appraiser between 1837-1840. His trade label can be found on furniture dating from the late Georgian to mid Victorian period. Labels from his Tudor street address suggest he traded in second hand furniture at the time rather than being an actual cabinet maker himself. This particular press has a moulded cornice above two beautifully figured cupboard doors with key and working lock. The interior has a total of five mahogany lined linen trays with interesting shaped detailing to their backs. The base is made up of two over two drawers, all being mahogany lined and having cock beading along with turned handles. One of the drawers carriers the stamp of W. Priest. This super linen press stands on a plain plinth and its substantial size splits into two sections making transportation slightly easier. The quality of timbers used and craftsmanship of its build are self evident in this piece. It also displays the character and charm only gained through age and use but this only adds to its beauty. An overall delightful antique, ideal for a home not spatially challenged. The mahogany has aged to a lovely warm medium shade with a striking grain, good patina, is in very good condition and has been beautifully cleaned using a traditional form of wax finishing.

Approx. dimensions are:

Height: 214cm / 84½"

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
