French Gothic Green Man Carved Oak Game Cupboard Bookcase

18th century
Sold by Elmgarden
Description

French Gothic Green Man Carved Oak Game Cupboard Bookcase

French Gothic Green Man Carved Oak Cupboard

Here we have a superb piece of intricately Carved Early French Gothic Oak Furniture most of which dates from the 18th Century with even older inset side panels

The Cupboard seems to have originated as a Food or Game Cupboard as it has mesh vents set into the sides of the top part presumably to allow air to the food kept inside. There are 2 very old 16th Century carved oak panels covering the vents, these open and close and permit the air flow. I expect that these were added at a later date when the Dresser was converted into a bookcase

The upper section of the Cupboard has two glazed doors enclosing three adjustable book shelves

The Top of the piece has a large and elaborately carved cornice and there is a great amount of carving on the front and sides. The Green man faces have alternate expressions of sad and happy as do the mythical faces on the 16th Century panels, a great deal of thought has gone into the representation of the carvings

The Bookcase has been sympathetically restored retaining all the aged features of the old wood it is in sound condition apart from age related wear as with any piece of this great age especially a French one it has had wood worm this is all treated and quite dead now

The bookcase is 87” high, 49” wide and 22” deep

In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
