This nineteenth-century maritime seaman's chest consists of warm brown camphorwood with a solid finish. Practical storage furniture for a home today, it functions as a decorative low table, a blanket box at the foot of a bed, or a storage chest in a living room, hallway or study. The rectangular trunk features visible exposed dovetail joints at the corners, a plinth base, a central dark metal keyhole escutcheon on the front, and dark rope handles fitted to the sides. Measuring 42 cm high, 99 cm wide, and 42 cm deep, the proportions suit placement in domestic interiors. The timber shows natural grain variations, and the structure remains in solid condition.

A seamans chest made from camphorwood is a specialized storage trunk historically used by sailors and naval officers during long voyages. These chests were designed to protect clothing and personal items from damp maritime conditions while travelling aboard ships.

Camphorwood was favoured in maritime furniture making due to its natural aromatic oils, which repel insects such as moths and wood-boring beetles. The dense grain of the timber also offered resistance to salt water and humidity changes experienced at sea.

Authentic 19th-century sea chests typically exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints at the corners, flush-fitting or recessed iron hardware, and side beckets or rope handles. The interior often retains the distinct aromatic fragrance characteristic of genuine camphorwood timber.

A vintage sea trunk functions exceptionally well as a low coffee table, a foot-of-bed storage box, or a distinctive accent piece in a hallway. Its rich timber tones provide visual warmth, grounding neutral contemporary schemes with texture and character.

Maintain antique camphorwood by dusting regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the timbers patina. Avoid positioning the chest near direct heat sources or in areas of extreme humidity to prevent timber movement.
