Description

A magnificent and highly decorative pair of 19th-century vivid blue serving wine bottles or decanters.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE VICTORIAN ERA:
Flutes cut through blue casing to clear glass: mid-Victorian lapidary cutting.
Multi-point star-cut bases within polished rims: nineteenth-century wheel-cut design.
Hand-ground stopper shanks matching the neck interiors: original fit.
Fine surface scratches under the base rims: regular handling over many decades.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

During the 19th century, glass decanters were designed to serve spirits, wine, and fortified liquors at the dining table. Coloured glass vessels, particularly in cobalt blue or ruby shades, were widely used in Victorian England to obscure natural sediment from port or sherry while adding colour to formal table settings.

These decanters were produced using an overlay technique, where a outer layer of coloured glass was fused over clear lead crystal. Glasscutters then carved vertical flutes or geometric panels through the coloured layer, revealing the transparent crystal underneath and creating contrast.

Authentic 19th-century decanters generally exhibit ground and polished pontil marks on the base, hand-cut facet details showing slight irregularities, and heavy lead crystal weight. Stoppers were frequently hand-fitted to individual bottles, often featuring matching etched numbers on the stopper plug and neck interior.

Antique glass decanters can be arranged on a sideboard top, drinks tray, or window sill where natural light accentuates their cut patterns. Grouping decanters of varying heights or pairing them with contemporary barware creates balanced visual interest in modern dining rooms or living spaces.

Clean antique decanters by hand using warm water and a non-abrasive liquid soap, avoiding dishwashers which cause irreversible clouding of lead crystal. Internal moisture can be removed by drying the vessel inverted on a specialized decanter stand or absorbing residual water with inserted paper towel strips.
