Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

In many West and Central African traditions, stools served as central cultural symbols of status, authority, and connection to ancestry. Animals such as elephants were frequently carved into the bases of prestige seating to represent strength, royal power, and longevity.

Traditional African stools are typically hand-carved from a single block of dense hardwood using hand adzes, chisels, and rasps. The wood is smoothed and finished using natural oils, waxes, or stains to protect the grain and highlight carved anatomical detailing.

Authentic pieces feature asymmetrical hand-tool marks, natural variation in carving depth, and signs of genuine age such as smooth surface wear on contact points. Integrated single-block construction rather than modern joinery or screws also indicates traditional handcrafting.

A carved figurative stool functions effectively as a sculptural accent table beside low seating, a plant stand, or a decorative hearth feature. Pairing dense polished timber with neutral linen upholstery or textured wool rugs creates an engaging tactile contrast.

Keep carved wooden items away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent cracking. Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and periodically apply a high-grade beeswax polish to nourish the timber and maintain its natural lustre.
