Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Green oxidisation in the turned recesses: metal aged naturally over decades.
Uneven caramel patina on the shafts: handling wear accumulated across many years.
Turned baluster sections on ball feet: Continental design around the turn of the century.
Spun and cast brass construction: typical early twentieth-century metalwork.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

A matching pair of large table lamps originates from circa 1900 in the Biedermeier style, manufactured in the Netherlands. Each lamp consists of a patinated brass base with an original caramel finish, featuring a turned baluster stem, a stepped circular base supported by small ball feet, and a pleated white fabric shade. The metal displays visible age patina through tone variations across the turned sections and the base mouldings. Each lamp stands 103 cm high with a 43 cm shade width. Such substantial pieces suit placement on a large sideboard top, a wide console table, or a deep hall chest within an English country house interior, providing warm downward illumination while adding classic proportions and traditional metalwork texture to a room scheme. The neutral cream pleated shades complement the warm brass tones, allowing the pair to integrate into both traditional and transitional decorative settings without requiring additional complex ornament.

FAQs

Brass table lamps modelled after candlesticks emerged during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, taking inspiration from classic turned candleholders. With the advent of electricity in the early twentieth century, manufacturers adapted these classic forms into wired table lamps to provide ambient accent lighting in residential interiors.

Traditional brass lamps are constructed by casting or turning solid brass sections, which are threaded onto a central metal rod. The base often includes weighted elements for stability, while the surface is finished with patination, lacquer, or left unlacquered to develop a natural age-related tarnish over time.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit natural surface wear, uneven patination in crevicess, and weight consistent with cast metal rather than hollow modern reproductions. Examining internal wiring entry points, thread types, and seam joins also provides evidence of original production methods.

Brass table lamps can be styled as a symmetrical pair on a console, sideboard, or flanking a bed to create balance. Mixing the metallic warmth of brass with modern neutral textiles or dark painted timber creates an effective visual contrast in contemporary spaces.

Patinated brass should be dusted regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth to prevent build-up. Abrasive polishes and chemical cleaners should be avoided, as they strip away the aged finish and surface oxidation that give the metal its character.
