Prominent medullary rays across the side panels: traditional quarter-sawn oak.
Period brass door pulls: matching original hardware showing natural surface handling.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian golden oak five-tier sectional barrister bookcase, dating from between 1900 and 1920, stands in a gentleman's library style. The warm brown timber piece comprises modular stacking units with glazed lift-up doors, brass handles, a moulded top cornice, and a plinth base. Measuring 192 cm high, 87 cm wide, and 37 cm deep, it provides ample vertical storage for books and display items. In a contemporary home, this bookcase suits a living room, study, or home office as an organised and practical storage solution. The modular design allows books to remain protected behind glass fronts while staying easily accessible.

FAQs

A barrister bookcase is a modular system of stackable shelf units fitted with glass doors that lift and slide back into the frame. Invented in the late nineteenth century and widely manufactured by Globe Wernicke, these designs allowed legal professionals to easily transport their libraries between chambers.

Traditional sectional bookcases were typically constructed from solid woods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, featuring glass panel doors, scissor-mechanism metal runners, and small brass knobs or handles.

Authentic pieces generally feature metal scissor mechanisms or side bands for interlocking sections, labelled paper tags or enamel labels inside the units, and distinctive up-and-over glazed door mechanisms.

These modular units function well in home offices, living rooms, or hallways to store modern book collections, ceramics, or collectibles while keeping items dust-free behind glass.

The timber should be periodically treated with high-grade beeswax to protect the finish, while glass panes can be cleaned with soft cloth and mild solution, taking care not to loosen original fixings.
